HdK2Sprachenakademie Aachen was founded in its current form in 2001 and initially concentrated exclusively on planning and running German courses for students and university applicants. Since then, the focus of our efforts has become considerably more varied, developing over the years and now shaping the daily work of about 200 employees.

As the region’s largest service provider in the area of German as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache, DaF), Sprachenakademie offers intensive and exam-preparation courses for levels A1 to C1 to a large number of German language students from academic backgrounds: university applicants, students, participants in Masters and Doctoral programmes, fully qualified academics and professionals make up the majority of our clientele in this field.

In 2004, Sprachenakademie was certified as an official provider of integration courses by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF). Here, too, our goal of always operating according to the latest standards and being able to provide a student-focussed service is reflected, on the one hand, in the quality of our courses. On the other hand, our many years of active participation on various integration boards and committees, our extensive scholarship programme and the great weight placed on individual student advice (extending far beyond purely subject-related requests) demonstrate how much we are geared towards this area.
Apart from integration courses, we also offer basic modules of Vocational German Language Promotion.

For self-contained groups, universities and institutions, we design tailored courses and programmes which may contain additional components to language training (e.g. subject classes, intercultural training, subject excursions, university visits, cultural and leisure programmes and accommodation).

As a licenced examination centre, we conduct a range of standardised language exams at regular intervals.

About 12,000 individuals take part in our courses, exams and programmes every year.

After conducting various German courses on behalf of FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences at their Aachen and Jülich sites and following the introduction of an initial partnership contract, the FH Aachen Language Centre was founded in 2005, its responsibilities met entirely by Sprachenakademie. Aside from coordinating the foreign-language offerings of several university departments as well as planning and conducting the FH Aachen summer courses, the Language Centre’s responsibilities also extend to developing, implementing and supporting special programmes.

In 2011, various departments of Sprachenakademie Aachen which were previously situated in different locations across Aachen, moved together into the city centre’s “Haus der Kohle”. The neighbouring building, which bears the historic name “Kaiserbad”, is now also home to several sections of Sprachenakademie.
