DSH - Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang

General Information on the Examination

The DSH exam of the Fachhochschule Aachen is a standardised, accredited German examination on the level C1 (according to the CEFR) which is acknowledged in all over Germany. It mostly addresses applicants for a place at university who require a language proficiency proof for admission to a German university. The DSH of the FH Aachen is an open and public examination, which means that also applicants of other universities are able to participate.
The DSH is also appropriate for professionals employed in an academic environment who desire to verify their language proficiency for various reasons.

We recommend taking this exam after approximately 900 - 1,000 teaching units. The examination commission may not accept applicants who will presumably not have reached an adequate level by the time the exam will take place.
Our intensive German courses are a perfect preparation for the examination. Before and during the courses, our team of consultants as well as the relevant course instructors are happy to assist our participants on this behalf.

The DSH carried out by the Fachhochschule Aachen is based on the DSH exmination regulations of the Fachhochschule Aachen issued on the 4th of July 2014. The examination regulations correspond to the framework of actions with respect to German language proficiency examinations for courses of study at German universities, issued on the 25th of June 2004, registered at the Conference of University Rectors (Reg.-No. 2-06/15). A DSH examination carried out according to the framework of actions will be acknowledged by all universities and colleges in Germany according to § 6 of the framework of actions.

Examination Outline and Evaluation

The DSH examination of the Fachhochschule Aachen consists of a written exam, followed by an oral exam, which may only be taken upon successful participation in the previous written exam. Both examination elements consist of several parts.
For detailed information with respect to all examination components please see our Description of the Examination Format. In additon to this, our sample test offers information on the examination format. You can download the test and the corresponding audio file here.

All examination elements of the DSH may be passed with respect to the following three levels:

• DSH-1 (57 % or higher) confirms "elementary" language proficiency.
• DSH-2 (67 % or higher) confirms "sophisticated" language proficiency.
• DSH-3 (82 % or higher) confirms "extraordinary" language proficiency.

If less than 57% of the possible points will be obtained during one examination element, this exam is considered “failed". Fore more details on the composition of the marking please also see our details on the examination format.

The DSH certificate of the FH Aachen is acknowledged by all German universities. Generally, an overall result of the DSH-2 level is required for admittance to university. In order to obtain detailed information on the admission regulations and requirements with respect to a particular course of study, we suggest to consult the webpages of the relevant university or institution.
